NIC VON WIELLIGH
NIC VON WIELLIGH was born in Springs in 1936. He matriculated in Nigel in 1953 and obtained the degrees of BSc in Physics and Chemistry (1956), MSc (1958) and DSc in Nuclear/Atomic Physics (1963) from the University of Pretoria. He then took up a post as head of the Department of Physics at the University of Durban-Westville, subsequently becoming chief scientist at the SABS. In 1975 he began his career at the Uranium Enrichment Corporation (UCOR) and in 1985 he accepted a managerial post at the Atomic Energy Corporation of South Africa (AEC).
After South Africa’s accession to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1991, Von Wielligh was responsible for the implementation of the IAEA safeguards in South Africa. In 1999 he became a consultant and technical adviser to the South African embassy in Vienna, Austria. He served there on the IAEA’s advisory committees on nuclear energy and safeguards, and advised South African government departments on these and other matters.
Von Wielligh is the author of various international scientific publications.
